Collaboration with Major Oil and Gas Company on Data Driven Well Planning

Now we are kicking off a collaboration where we:

  • load complete GoM datasets to the Pro Well Plan platform
  • perform advanced offset analysis
  • create preliminary well designs
  • transfer experiences across teams and phases
  • prepare for integrations with other software

Integrations

We think the solution is to be a part of a bigger picture, and expose our API for easy integrations. That means we can guide users within clients work processes as a micro service, or we can let the users pick their favorite applications, and we share the data and results.

With modern databases being built in many business segments, this saves oil companies large sums, as we provide specialist API's for well design and offset analysis, and can quickly integrate with existing infrastructure, without costly and complex work for the oil company.

Our wellbot Kelly describes figures, wells and work processes, and can integrate with any application, such as:

  • autogenerated presentations
  • updates in communication tools (Slack, Teams etc)
  • reporting systems for progress tracking
  • rig scheduling systems
  • or any other work process dependent of the well plan

The chart below shows how the Pro Well Plan API works to serve our frontend and other applications, with modern and dynamic interfaces to sources and applications. We are available on any cloud solution.

New Work Processes

In the offset analysis in Pro Well Plan, engineers searches for patterns in large data sets, and differentiate systematic problems from more random incidents. Stratigraphy, well paths, pressures and time data are combined in a well guided work process, where the task is to collect and share information early on. It is amazing to see how much easier communication flows in well planning teams when they can share well designs visually.

The new work process let you carry out in-depth analysis of events before they happen, and they only take a few minutes to get started. Traditionally these are studies which have kicked off after a string of consecutive negative events in operations.

This is the work process in Pro Well Plan:

  1. Analyse historic wells. Find patterns and dig deep
  2. Store and group wells for references for well design, events, uncertainties
  3. Start planning a new well, based on an offset well
  4. Use references to plan well design details
  5. Analyse results and forward all plans to next phase
  6. Continue analyzing and update well designs as the project matures

With all the data in one place, together with all the well designs created in the well planning, the users are empowered with a strong platform which can communicate visually and technically.

The offset analysis and preliminary well designs are available throughout the detailed well planning process, and new challenges in the well planning leads to new rounds of offset analysis and preliminary designs.

Offset Well Review

Pro Well Plan's new offset well review work process is focused on the task the engineer is doing. It allows for creativity in early well planning, which saves the oil company expensive surprises in operations.

  1. Create a well to store your analysis
  2. Browse nearby wells to learn about geology and well designs
  3. Switch between map and similarity view to discover hidden patterns
  4. Store findings in groups of wells with representative names

The well similarity holds a bit of magic, where machine learning guide you to similar wells. In stead of reading reports to look for analogs, the users quickly browse wells which are lined up based on similarity in stratigraphy or well path. When findings are grouped together, they are easy to share and bring up for discussions in meetings. This way, engineers are able to bring in peers and colleagues in discussions regarding well designs very early on in the well planning.

Preliminary Well Design

The Preliminary Well Design module allows for detailed prototyping of wells and well designs, and works in the following steps:

  1. Copy a well with geology and casing
  2. Update geology, pressures, casing design and wellpath
  3. See statistics like inclination through formations while planning
  4. Evaluate kick calcs and pressure margins on the fly (also hydraulics and pipe loads)
  5. See time depth curve with autogenerated operations
  6. Trigger all technical calculations through the api on any change, or for all well designs

Throughout the well design phase, you encounter new challenges, and head back to the offset well review to find answers.

The studies from the Offset Well Review and the well designs from the Preliminary Well Design are available visually and through the API throughout the rest of the planning, and real data are stored in the offset review when the well is actually drilled.
